All are welcome to come and join in the fun of the 27th Annual TUCSON SOLAR POTLUCK. This is the longest continuously running solar potluck in the world! Truly a Tucson Tradition, and great opportunity to see some practical and innovative solar energy in useful action. Citizens For Solar (CFS) invites you to bring any solar invention that you would like to display, whether it is for cooking or not. If you are not already a solar chef, and don’t have a solar cooking device, come and join us any way to learn about how simple it can be. You will surely be amazed by the innovation and simplicity that some of the members bring to solar cook their food in! Everything from commercially manufactured solar ovens, elaborate motorized solar tracking ovens built by famous local engineers to totally low tech solutions (cardboard and old tires are actually viable material for solar ovens)! See and taste food from dozens of types of solar ovens, most of which are built by their owners and are “one of a kind”.

The Solar Potluck feast begins around 4:30 to 5 PM depending upon the weather . Either bring your solar oven and cook with us, or bring a dish to share and join in on the fun. Enjoy solar Powered Music during the afternoon and into the evening. Taste solar cooked food, see Photovoltaic solar electricity generated, feel solar cooling, and see solar powered fountains. If you are coming to cook, please be set up by 8:30 AM as we usually close the gate (for cars) to the exhibition area by 9 AM. The Solar Potluck is free to the public, although there is an entrance fee of $5 per car-load to enter the State Park. The event is held in the “Large Group Use Area” Catalina St. Park is located 5.2 miles north of Ina Rd on Oracle Rd.

Citizens For Solar is a non profit organization chartered to educate the general public about the benefits of solar power. Although the group focuses on solar cooking, other applications of solar such as: photovoltaics, solar cooling, solar water heating, solar air heating, distillers, and food dehydrators are also recommended and displayed if possible. CFS holds one main annual event per year, the Tucson Solar Potluck and Exhibition at Catalina State Park. In addition, individual members perform oven cooking demonstrations in public parks and schools.

Francine Blake from Devizes, England. is one of the worlds experts on crop circles. She is from the Wilshire crop circle study group and is coming to Arizona to present some of her findings at a conference in Phoenix. Her only other presentation in AZ will be at Windspirit
Community on Thursday evening the 16th of November at 7:00pm.

There will be chances to ask questions and have discussions as to possible theories of why they are showing up right now in this time in history, where else including north America are we finding crop circles, and other recent research that is relevant to the subject. We are very lucky to have such a world renowned expect on crop circles come visit with us and present on her many years of research and she will show slides of the hundreds of crop circles found all over the world every year. We will also have a pot luck meal that evening, food should be ready by 6pm so we can eat and be ready for the presentation slide show. We will have the sauna fired up in the mid afternoon as well.

Permaculture is a way of seeing the land. Appreciating the places where ecosystems are functioning, and seeing the potential in places where they are not. Having an inkling of what the land may have held long before we were here, and envisioning what it may look like when we’re gone.
Nature is the teacher. She’s had eons of trial and error. She knows how to design a productive ecosystem everywhere on Earth. It’s mostly humans who have upset that balance through our ignorance. But she forgives us, and will work with us if we let her. We just need to watch her and she’ll show us how she does it.

We need to model our own agricultural systems, settlements, and transportation systems after the patterns found in nature. If we based our development on the contours of the land, our civilization could be a builder of soil instead of a source of it’s erosion. If we viewed our waste as a resource and the sources of fertility, we could be part of a cycle and not a dead end.

I’m not sure what will catalyze our greedy minds into creating a sustainable civilization on Earth, and perhaps we will not get there this time around. But to glimpse a world where our choices make sense in our own backyards is worth the work. Practicing permaculture gives you the sense that you’re doing the right thing, and that peace of mind is the most precious thing.
